ThunderGypsy’s sound can best be described as Southern Soul, a musical genre that originates from a combination of styles, including blues, country, early rock and roll, and a strong gospel influence. Southern Soul comes from the tradition when greats like Aretha Franklin traveled to Muscle Shoals to record her classics “Chain of Fools” and “Respect”… When Wilson Pickett went to Memphis and sang “In the Midnight Hour” and “Mustang Sally”… And when Curtis Mayfield, from Atlanta, wrote “People Get Ready.”
That tradition continues today with bands like Tedeschi Trucks Band, Alabama Shakes and Warren Haynes incorporating these roots with the Southern Rock and Blues traditions of the Allman Bros. and Stevie Ray Vaughn. ThunderGypsy plays all of this and more, creating music that makes you want to move!
The Gypsy spirit is alive in their eclectic mix of music as they take you on a musical road trip from the birthplace of Southern Soul in Muscle Shoals to the Rock of Macon; from the classic sound of the Memphis R and B to the streets of New Orleans’ French Quarter with its gospel-infused Funk. With side trips through St. Louis up to Chicago for their rocking electric Blues, the journey never ends. By taking familiar songs and intensifying the arrangements with all of these influences, ThunderGypsy creates a powerful sound that has been mesmerizing audiences since its inception.
ThunderGypsy was conceived during a chance encounter in 2013. One year later, the stars aligned and these four musicians with similar tastes in music and attitude formed ThunderGypsy.
With Ken Williams on Drums, Richard Price on Guitar, Paul Allison on Keyboards and Heather Statham on vocals, this quartet delivers a full sound guaranteed to delight your ears and keep you dancing and grooving all night long! Folks often say they’ve never seen a band having so much fun playing together.
Heather Statham, from Griffin, Ga. is the pure definition of a soulful voice. With the power of Janis and the soul of Aretha, Heather has the ability to find and express that deep feeling and emotion that moves you in each song. She began performing at an early age in her local theatre in a variety of plays and musicals. While attending college at Brenau University, she discovered the power and strength of her singing voice. After several years in Regional Theatre in South Carolina, she turned her energies towards performance of live music of some her favorite genres – Blues, Soul, and Motown. Pursuing the love of that soulful music led her back to Atlanta and eventually to the members of ThunderGypsy.
Ken Williams grew up in Wichita, KS and later moved to Atlanta, GA. He started playing drums at the age of two and began playing in church at the age of eight. Ken’s influences are many ranging from jazz players to the second-line drummers in New Orleans such as Stanton Moore from Galactic. Ken has played in bands of many genres and is constantly pursuing new levels in his musical life by watching great musicians and learning from others. Ken also plays saxophone.
Richard Price - Guitar
Richard grew up playing guitar in bands in Texas and studied music composition at the University of North Texas, studying Jazz and Classical during the day and playing Rock and Country at night. He worked in the music business during college and after. Eventually, he transitioned to sales and marketing positions in the home entertainment industry. This took him from Texas to Oregon and from Tennessee to Georgia, soaking up musical influences all the way. The music of Georgia –The Allmans, James Brown, Ray Charles and Chet Atkins-had always had a profound effect on Richard so he was glad to land in Atlanta where he’s come back to music performance. Playing in the great music scene of Atlanta led him to the members of ThunderGypsy whose attitude towards music making inspires him.
Paul Allison has been performing in the Atlanta area playing small venues to outdoor festivals. Known for a more gospel approach with strong emphasis on organ as well as piano, he also possesses the ability to “lay down the bass” at the same time. Upon meeting the fellow members of ThunderGypsy he was awestruck at their ability and diversity. He always looks forward to performing for audiences with Heather, Ken and Richard!
